Permit

What is a Permit?

A permit is a written document that lets property investors make a major modification to their home. Cities and counties typically grant this permission so that you or your contractor can compliantly complete the work.

A permit is important for landlords because it ensures that the property meets all of the necessary safety and health requirements. It also protects landlords from potential liability if there are any accidents or injuries on the property.

Things you need a permit for

Most major changes to the home requires a permit and, should renovations be performed without a permit, future property sales can become complicated. Not to mention, the city can also shut the renovation process down.

Some of the things you may need a permit for include:

  • Putting up a fence
  • Adding windows
  • Removing plumbing
  • Major electrical repairs including electrical outlets
  • Sheds and ADUs
  • Decks
  • Garage conversions
  • Changing the home layout
  • Demolition
  • Building addition
