Commercial real estate

Commercial real estate

What is Commercial real estate?

Commercial Real Estate is a property used typically for work rather than living. These locations are typically rented out to businesses.

Some examples include industrial spaces, storage facilities, strip malls, offices, retail locations, and more. Apartment complexes with 5 or more units also qualify as commercial.

Why this matters

It's important to know this distinction well when property investing. Different property types have different considerations and standards. Some of the groups that often focus on one type of property include:

  • Brokers and Real Estate Agents
  • Listing sites (eg. Zillow vs CoStar Loopnet)
  • Lenders
  • LPs and other equity holders like family offices
